On November 23, 2016, on behalf of the Indigenous Bar Association, Drew Lafond, an associate with MLT’s Aboriginal practice area in Calgary, presented to the Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples on Bill S-3, an Act to amend the Indian Act (elimination of sex-based inequities in registration). Drew’s presentation (Drew is at about 24 min mark) focused on the rights of First Nations to assume jurisdiction over their citizenship laws as well as technical problems with the Bill in its current form. Following his presentation to the Committee, Drew was invited to brief the Minister of Indigenous Affairs and legislative drafters from the Department of Justice about technical deficiencies in the Bill identified by the Indigenous Bar Association.
Drew is currently a Director of the Indigenous Bar Association and has sat on the board of directors for nine years and the executive committee for three years.
