On Monday, January 6, Scott Bell, Brent Matkowski and Ryan Morasiewicz presented to the Banff & Lake Louise Hospitality Association (BLHHA) on “Employment Law: An Essential Workshop for Employers”.
The full-day workshop was tailored for employers in the hospitality industry including labour and employment topics such as mental health accommodation, legal cannabis in the workplace, terminations, immigration, and liability waivers.
Scott Bell presented on “Immigration Compliance Obligations and Audits”. The session focused on applicable immigration obligations in the employment of foreign workers, immigration compliance issues and how to handle compliance audits should they arise.
Brent Matkowski presented on “Legal Cannabis and the Workplace” where he discussed best practices for employers to deal with medical and recreational marijuana; “Employee Terminations” providing an overview and update on handling terminations; and “Accommodating Mental Health in the Workplace” in which he covered the legal framework for accommodation and obligations of employers and employees.
Ryan Morasiewicz presented on “Protecting Your Operation Through Liability Waivers”. The session provided an introduction to the firm’s Outdoor/Adventure Law practice area and covered legal obligations and best practices for administering liability waivers.

Scott Bell practises immigration law with a focus on business and employment-based applications. His clients include private corporations and individuals. Scott has advised various employers and individuals with regard to federal immigration applications, including work permits, Labour Market Impact Assessments, Free Trade Agreement exemptions and permanent residency. He is based out of the firm’s Saskatoon office.
Brent Matkowski maintains a general labour and employment practice. He assists unionized and non-unionized employers with a variety of labour and employment law issues including labour relations, human rights, occupational health and safety, workers’ compensation, labour standards, employment contracts, employer policies, and discipline. He is based out of the firm’s Saskatoon office.
Ryan Morasiewicz focuses his practice on general commercial and insurance defence litigation. He has a breadth of experience in many areas, including health law, contractual disputes, environmental law, administrative law and complex commercial disputes. He is the lead of the firm’s Outdoor/Adventure practice area.
