On September 19, lawyers firm-wide will travel to Calgary for the annual MLT Aikins Lawyers’ Retreat – an opportunity to connect with peers, get to know the city and, most importantly, to focus our collective efforts on giving back to the communities that our firm calls home.

We kickoff the retreat by dedicating time to volunteer efforts, with lawyers and staff in each of our offices heading into the community to offer their time to different charitable organizations. The opportunity to have our team roll up their sleeves and actively engage with local communities is aligned with our core values, including the call to support the places in which our team members live and work. Those in Calgary, where the retreat is being held this year, can sign up for any of seven different activities, with each supporting a vulnerable population in the city.

This year’s outreach activities include support for:

Canadian Blood Services’ “Partners for Life” program

Established in 1998, Canadian Blood Services is an independent registered charity that is responsible for operating the national blood and plasma supply system, as well as Canada’s blood bank. The “Partners for Life” program, which MLT Aikins participates in, is an opportunity for companies to organize staff to donate towards an annual goal.

YW Calgary

For more than a century, YW has kept its doors open to women. Dedicated to breaking cycles of domestic abuse, homelessness and poverty for women and their families, they support clients in meeting their immediate and most basic needs, then work directly with them to create positive change in their lives.

Silvera for Seniors

Silvera for Seniors is a non-profit provider with 60 plus years of service that Calgarians trust to provide a diverse selection of housing with services and supports for independent older adults.

Women in Need Society

Founded in 1992, the Women in Need Society (WINS) stands as a cherished thrift charity deeply rooted in the city of Calgary. WINS operates to address gender inequality and poverty alleviation for women and their families while promoting sustainability through thrift stores.

Calgary Drop-in Centre

The Calgary Drop-In Centre welcomes adults at risk of or experiencing homelessness. Working collaboratively with community partners, they offer a broad spectrum of care including emergency shelter, health programs and housing options – all geared to help people find their way home.

Calgary Food Bank

The Calgary Food Bank is the first line of emergency food support for people facing crisis. As Calgary’s main charitable food hub and the most accessible food bank, they have the capacity to serve families, individuals and organizations to fight hunger.

The United Way of Calgary and Area

As a local social impact organization, the United Way of Calgary and Area strategically invests in, partners with and mobilizes local community agencies to solve complex social issues. Their work and investments stay in Calgary and the surrounding area, supporting thousands of local people every year.

While the Retreat offers an opportunity to come together and concentrate our efforts on one particular city, firm-wide community outreach activities will also simultaneously take place at other MLT Aikins offices in Vancouver (independent beach cleanup initiatives), Edmonton (Edmonton Food Bank), Saskatoon (Saskatoon Food Bank and Ronald McDonald House), Regina (Regina Food Bank) and Winnipeg (Take Pride Winnipeg).
