Last week from October 2 to 4, MLT Aikins lawyers and staff firm-wide met in Edmonton for this year’s annual Lawyers’ Retreat. It was a chance to connect with colleagues from other MLT Aikins offices across the country, explore the city and come together to give back to vulnerable communities in need.

Each year, we select a number of local organizations where we can volunteer our time and efforts to drive positive change while also fostering a culture of responsibility and inclusivity within the firm. The opportunity to have our team roll up their sleeves and actively engage with local communities aligns with our core values, including the call to support the places in which our team members live and work.

This year’s outreach activities included support for:

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton & Area

BGC Bigs is a non-profit organization that supports the healthy development of children and youth through mentoring relationships, after-school programs and community programming. Their mission is to provide safe spaces, positive relationships, services and opportunities that help young people develop the skills and confidence needed for long-term success.

Dogs with Wings

Dogs with Wings is an Edmonton-based charity that breeds, trains and places assistance dogs for people with disabilities and for professionals working in supportive environments. The organization’s mission is to foster integration, independence and improved quality of life through highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing after-care support.

Edmonton’s Food Bank

Providing food hampers and other food resources to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity, Edmonton’s Food Bank is one of the largest food support organizations in the Edmonton area. Their food hampers support more than 43,000 people monthly, and they help support over 500,000 meals and snacks each month through their partner agencies.

Riseup Society

A Safe Place

A Safe Place is the operating name of the Strathcona Shelter Society. A Safe Place provides emergency shelter, crisis intervention and support services for individuals affected by domestic violence. Since opening the shelter, A Safe Place has supported more than 25,000 women and children.

The Edmonton Public Schools Foundation

The Edmonton Public Schools Foundation (EPSF) provides practical support to students through programs that fall outside the scope of Alberta’s public education funding. The EPSF helps students succeed both academically and socially by addressing systemic inequalities and providing access to essential resources.

While the Retreat offered an opportunity to come together and concentrate our efforts on one particular city, firm-wide community outreach activities also took place at other MLT Aikins offices, including events in support of Gender Equality Week, the Elizabeth Fry Society, Regina Foodbank and WIN House, among others.
