Tréchelle Bunn awarded 2025 MLT Aikins Indigenous Scholarship

Tréchelle Bunn, a second-year law student at the University of Manitoba’s Robson Hall, has been awarded the 2025 MLT Aikins Indigenous Scholarship in the amount of $6,000.
Tréchelle was one of many highly qualified applicants from across Canada who applied for the scholarship. A member of the Birdtail Sioux Dakota Nation, Tréchelle exemplifies academic excellence, leadership and an unwavering commitment to community.
At Robson Hall, Tréchelle is an active member of the Indigenous Law Students’ Association and volunteers with the Legal Aid Manitoba Prison Law Clinic. Her longstanding dedication to storytelling is reflected in her eight-year tenure as a weekly news columnist. A four-time Academic All-Canadian, she has balanced her studies with university-level hockey, excelling both on and off the ice.
Her advocacy extends far beyond the classroom. Tréchelle was elected Youth Chief for the Southern Chiefs’ Organization of Manitoba and is the founder of the Reconciliation Run, Canada’s first National Truth and Reconciliation half-marathon, held in partnership with Under Armour Canada. She serves as co-chair of Manitoba’s Suicide Prevention Strategy Advisory Group and as a board member of both the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba and the Nellie McClung Foundation.
Tréchelle’s contributions have been recognized nationally. She is a Youth Laureate with Indspire and a recipient of the King Charles III Coronation Medal, the CBC Manitoba Future 40 Award and the Nellie McClung Foundation’s “Yes I Can” Leadership Award.
In her scholarship application, Tréchelle shared her vision of using her legal education to advance Indigenous law and serve her community in meaningful ways. She has indicated her intention to run for Chief of Birdtail Sioux Dakota Nation in the community’s upcoming election and sees her legal training as a vital part of her future in leadership.
