Working as a summer student at MLT Aikins allowed me to start developing relationships at the firm, experience various aspects of the practice of law outside of the classroom, and begin to develop an interest in several areas of law before completing my legal education (read more in “The Law Firm Summer Student Experience,” CBA SK, 2023)

The mentorship and learning opportunities offered by MLT Aikins to their summer students are outstanding. Under the guidance of MLT Aikins lawyers, paralegals and legal assistants, summer students are able to develop the skills that are crucial for success in the legal field. The MLT Aikins team fostered a safe environment for the students to learn and grow as emerging professionals. I cannot give enough positive feedback about my experience at MLT Aikins. The firm was open and welcoming… and I highly value the connections I was able to make. The lawyers and staff were overwhelmingly kind and helpful and I always felt comfortable going to anyone to ask questions or get advice. The mentorship aspect of the program was highly beneficial. As a first year student, entering a new firm can be rather intimidating, but the transition was seamless and the training specialists provided me with all the knowledge I needed to hit the ground running. MLT Aikins is truly a wonderful place to work.  

As a summer student at MLT Aikins (Winnipeg office), I was given the latitude to try a variety of assignments while making meaningful contributions to the files. Not only were the lawyers very knowledgeable and professional, but they were also very patient in making sure that I understood the assignments and learned from the experience. My mentor went out of his way to make sure that I had enough exposure to the areas of law that I would like to pursue.

During my summer at MLT Aikins, I had the opportunity to gain exposure to a wide variety of practice areas, which significantly broadened my understanding of the legal field. This diverse experience was enriched by the firm’s collaborative environment, where I learned a great deal through casual interactions with the lawyers. These informal conversations provided invaluable insights, allowing me to grasp practical aspects of law that went beyond what could be learned from formal assignments alone.

The firm offers a rotation during the articling period, exposing students to various practice areas and groups. This hands-on experience is crucial for discovering one’s preferred path in law. As a full-service law firm, MLT Aikins allows you to pursue your passions and work within a practice group that aligns with your interests. The firm supports and encourages self-starters, providing opportunities to develop skills in both established and emerging areas. I have greatly benefited from this supportive environment, which has helped me grow professionally and personally.

I was impressed with the collegial and communal approach the firm takes when resolving complex client issues. Being surrounded by many lawyers with various areas of focus facilitated my learning experience. I was actively encouraged to pursue work in areas which interested me and felt supported throughout my summer experience. The research and writing skills honed during this time will prove invaluable to my remaining time at school. 

My time at MLT Aikins as a summer student has been an incredibly rewarding experience. The firm’s commitment to mentorship, professional growth and a collaborative environment has made a lasting impact on me. I had the opportunity to work on interesting projects, interact with associates and partners, and develop key legal skills in a supportive setting. The firm’s dedication to fostering a culture of learning and inclusivity made me feel valued from day one. I’m grateful for the chance to be part of such a supportive team, and I know the skills and connections I’ve gained here will shape my career in law. 

MLT Aikins’s lawyers always sought to include me in practical experiences, whether going to court, client meetings or mediation.  I greatly appreciated the firm’s “open-door” policy, which meant I could speak to any associate or partner in the office, and they would be more than happy to answer any questions I had – whether about a particular assignment or legal work in general. The team was very welcoming and willing to invest time in my development, and I was made to feel like a part of the team. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking a meaningful and enriching legal summer job. 

I had the chance to work in a team-driven environment that valued exploration and growth. I was able to explore areas of law that interested me while gaining real-world experience through attending court and mediations. The collaborative culture within the firm was perhaps the best feature — I could go to any lawyer’s office at any time for advice, guidance or a new assignment. This accessibility created a welcoming atmosphere where learning was constantly encouraged. Being able to seek advice from experienced lawyers expanded my knowledge and built my confidence. The firm’s dedication to fostering growth made my experience there incredibly rewarding.
