From September 13-15, 2024, MLT Aikins lawyers from across Western Canada will meet in Winnipeg for the firm’s lawyer retreat. The retreat takes place annually in a different Canadian city.
To kick off the retreat on Friday, September 13, MLT Aikins will volunteer to support six Winnipeg-based non-profit organizations in an outreach initiative designed to give back to the community.
“Volunteering with these six organizations allows MLT Aikins to demonstrate our commitment and give back to the community,” says Aaron Runge, MLT Aikins managing partner. “Collectively, these organizations provide essential services to those experiencing houselessness, support families in need with furniture, offer a welcoming meal or foster community pride. Each organization shares a common goal – to uplift and strengthen our Winnipeg community. We want to express our gratitude to the organizations, their meaningful work and the opportunity to have us participate in supporting their work.”
The organizations and outreach activities in Winnipeg include:
Harvest Manitoba – collects and shares 12 million lbs. of nutritious food to hungry Manitobans every year. MLT Aikins will tour the facility, and then help with a food sort and packing food hampers.
Main Street Project – serving the needs of Winnipeg’s most vulnerable residents since 1972, Main Street Project offers programming and services to help community members build stability in their lives. MLT Aikins team members will sort clothing and make and distribute sandwiches to those experiencing houselessness.
Oyate Tipi Cumini Yape – is Canada’s most responsible furniture removal service. Funds collected from the furniture removal service go back to the organization to support its mission of ending furniture poverty. Team members will build and fix furniture which is then provided to families in need.
Agape Table – enhances the lives of those in need by welcoming everyone to its table, without judgment or bias, by offering food, fellowship and support. Finance team members will make sandwiches, bag meals, prepare fruits and vegetables, sort donations and serve meals to the organization’s guests.
Take Pride Winnipeg’s mission is to inspire community pride, raise public awareness and promote citizen responsibility in making the city of Winnipeg clean and beautiful. In support of this mission, team members will clean up litter throughout downtown.
United Way Pop-Up Day of Caring – has a mission to improve lives and build community by engaging individuals and mobilizing collective action. MLT Aikins team members will build snack packs for individuals and families in need.
These community outreach initiatives align with the firm’s core values including supporting the communities in which MLT Aikins team members live and work.
Community outreach activities will also take place at the other MLT Aikins office locations on the same day. In Saskatoon, at Elmwood Residences Inc.; in Regina, at the Regina Food Bank; in Edmonton, at Edmonton’s Food Bank; in Calgary, with a Cheer Mail program to support Calgary seniors; and in Vancouver, with a Kitsilano Beach clean-up. In total, MLT Aikins will have almost 250 team members participating in community outreach activities across the six communities.
