Sean Gray awarded 2026 MLT Aikins Indigenous Scholarship

Sean Gray, a second-year law student at the University of Victoria’s Faculty of Law, has been awarded the 2026 MLT Aikins Indigenous Scholarship in the amount of $6,000.
Sean was one of many highly qualified applicants from across Canada who applied for the scholarship. A member of the Enoch Cree Nation in Central Alberta, Treaty No. 6 Territory, Sean is currently completing the University of Victoria’s Joint Degree Program in Common Law and Indigenous Legal Orders.
At the Faculty of Law, Sean serves in multiple volunteer roles, including as a 2L JID Representative for the Indigenous Law Students Association. She is also currently working as a Research Assistant where, in addition to her other duties, she analyzes Indigenous Legal Orders and coordinates gatherings between local Indigenous communities and lawyers.
Sean’s drive to uplift her community through academic excellence is undeniable. She has been recognized numerous times for her achievements and has received several awards, including the Carolyn E. & Robert J. McCormick Aboriginal Entrance Scholarship, the James Patrick Folinsbee Prize in English and the Peter Lougheed Scholarship.
Sean has a rich history of community involvement, particularly when it comes to the mentorship and uplifting of Indigenous youth and students. Prior to law school, Sean earned her Honours Degree in Secondary Education from the University of Alberta’s Aboriginal Teacher’s Education Program. After completing her degree, she made use of her skills and knowledge in her roles as a Graduation Coordinator for the Edmonton Catholic School District’s Indigenous Learning Services team and as a four-year member of the Enoch Youth Advisory Council.
During her time on the Council, Sean developed a deep understanding of the wide-reaching and multi-generational issues faced by Indigenous youth, her Nation and First Nations across Canada, particularly when it came to issues of sovereignty. In her scholarship application, Sean shared her vision of true Nationhood for her people through the nourishment and advancement of Indigenous Law. She intends to use her legal education to champion this vision, inspired by the teachings of her nôhkum Linda.
