MLT Aikins and MTMS students partner again to support the Regina Food Bank for 2024
Lawyers, middle school students and bags of rice, oh my!
On Saturday, December 7, 2024, MLT Aikins lawyers, Mother Teresa Middle School (MTMS) students and staff from both organizations continued an annual tradition of volunteering at the Regina Food Bank.
The firm’s Regina office raised funds to purchase rice for food hampers this holiday season. The Regina Food Bank then matched the donation with lentils, and lawyers, students and staff all came together to measure rice and lentils into one-pound bags. Rice and lentils are staples for many families in the community that rely on the food bank.
Regina partner Milad Alishahi led this community project with support from lawyer Dexter Bricker and legal assistant Lynda Bachiu.
“The partnership between our law firm and Mother Teresa Middle School is tremendously important to us, as is our longstanding support of the Regina Food Bank. As a firm, we actively maintain a local presence and support the communities where we live and work, including our most vulnerable community members. This is a special day for all of us each year,” says Milad.
Earlier this year, MLT Aikins committed $100,000 to the innovative Community Food Hub. Read more about our contribution here: the MLT Aikins Mâwacihitowikamikos Welcoming Area opened at the Regina Food Bank.
MLT Aikins Bursary
MLT Aikins has been happy to support MTMS students for more than a decade. The MLT Aikins Bursary, worth approximately $300,000, was established 12 years ago to provide financial assistance to students. The fund is replenished annually by donations from the firm’s lawyers.
Each year, approximately $15,000 is disbursed to the more than 150 students who are currently enrolled in MTMS or studying in high school or university. The fund covers everything from bus passes to graduation expenses, clothing and extracurricular activities – everything the students’ parents would pay for if they could afford to do so. The bursary is also used to defray some of the costs of post-secondary education.
