Indigenous Leadership & Business: Legal Update 2026

This seminar is specifically designed for leaders of Indigenous Nations and their associated entities in Saskatchewan.

The full-day, in-person seminar will explore many of the legal topics that matter most to Indigenous governance, presented by experienced MLT Aikins lawyers. The topics include negotiating specific claims and litigation, wills and estates, employee drug and alcohol testing, and fraud investigation.

Attendees will receive practical and actionable guidance for managers, human resource professionals and leaders within Indigenous organizations and communities, complete with comprehensive presentation slides that will serve as valuable ongoing resources for individuals and their organizations.

The agenda will include time for questions and answers and allow for networking over the lunch break and before and after the seminar.

    • Treaty benefits: annuities, agricultural benefits, ammunition and twine, suits and salaries

    • Estate planning for on- and off-reserve assets owned by band members

  • Employee Drug and Alcohol Testing

    • Navigating drug and alcohol testing: Pre-employment, reasonable cause, post-incident, site-access and random testing
    • Expectations regarding privacy and safety-sensitive workplaces
    • Addictions, medical information and the duty to accommodate
    • Developing drug and alcohol policies
  • Fraud Investigation

    • Identifying fraud, common risk areas and warning signs
    • Consequences of fraud: Criminal, civil and reputational
    • Clarifying governance roles between leadership, administration and auditors
    • Prevention measures and proactive strategies for minimizing risk of fraud
    • Responding to suspected fraud, investigations and procedural considerations

  • Held in-person at Wanuskewin Heritage Park, Saskatoon
  • Cost: $100/person plus taxes
    • Group discount if 4 or more are registered from one organization or Nation
