I joined MLT Aikins as a summer student, eager to bridge the gap between theory and practice, and it exceeded every expectation. From mentors who offered honest feedback to peers who became friends, I consistently felt supported and motivated. Team lunches, education sessions and after-work events were more than just fun – they were a great way to learn about different roles, exchange ideas and build a network that extends well beyond our time here. Great environment to grow. Working at MLT Aikins this summer gave me incredible insight into the practice of law. Being able to explore what my interests are by meeting and working with kind, helpful lawyers who take the time to help me grow and be my best. It is an amazing experience and I have been given the opportunity to make real connections as well as do meaningful work in a safe, collegial environment.

My summer at MLT Aikins has been an incredible experience. The mentorship is outstanding, with partners and associates who are approachable and genuinely invested in helping students grow. The team at MLT Aikins made me feel welcome right from day one. From structured orientation events to ad hoc social events, I was able to connect with members across the firm right away. I had access to well-developed training materials and training specialists throughout my onboarding process, which helped me to build familiarity with the firm’s tools. Throughout my time with the firm, I have built my confidence and practical lawyering skills.

I have had such an amazing time over the last few months at MLT Aikins. This summer was an incredible learning experience and, from day one, I felt welcomed into the team and trusted to contribute. The mentorship program connected me with incredible lawyers who generously shared their insights, making every one of my questions an opportunity to learn. The hands-on training and practical experience was invaluable as a student, whether it was attending a signing or heading to court, we were always asked to tag along. I received exposure to a variety of practice areas which gave me the skills and confidence that I will carry forward into my education and legal career. Most importantly, I appreciated the firm’s collegial and collaborative environment. Every lawyer was so willing to teach which made every day both engaging and rewarding. I would recommend this firm to any future student who is eager to learn!

Starting at MLT Aikins with only one year of law school under my belt, I was very happy with the positive and welcoming environment I experienced from day one. I was quickly provided with lots of constructive feedback on all my work which allowed me to improve my skills and gain knowledge of different areas of the law. All the lawyers were willing to take the time to discuss tasks and places to improve. My mentor, in particular, took the time to review each piece of work line-by-line with me, which was invaluable and extremely helpful. I would recommend MLT to any student who is eager to learn and join a team of lawyers committed to developing students into competent lawyers.

Summering at MLT Aikins has provided me with invaluable exposure to the legal profession and opportunities to grow and make professional connections. Being a summer student allowed me to observe experienced legal professionals in action and participate in meaningful ways. I was given opportunities to explore many areas of law within litigation and corporate streams, and was able to pursue work I found interesting, which has helped inform my career goals as I progress. The highlight of my experience is the amazing people I met through my short time with the firm, including my peers, colleagues and supervisors who offered support, encouragement and respect. Being entrusted with flexibility and having the chance to develop positive working relationships (and friendships) with future colleagues makes me deeply excited to return, and I look forward to applying the skills I’ve acquired here this summer to 3L and beyond.

My summer at MLT Aikins’s Calgary office opened my eyes to the vast opportunities this profession – and this firm – can provide to students. Impactful, educational and eventful are the words I would use to describe my experience here this summer. Friendly, supportive and knowledgeable are the ones I would use to describe the lawyers at this firm. My time here was overwhelmingly positive, and I would recommend this program to all students seeking to develop their legal skills.

MLT Aikins provides students with the tools they need to succeed in the legal profession. The lawyers, paralegals and assistants work hard to ensure the students have a safe place to learn and grow their skills. Working as a summer student at MLT Aikins allowed me to start developing relationships at the firm, experience various aspects of the practice of law outside of the classroom, and begin to develop an interest in several areas of law before completing my legal education (read more in “The Law Firm Summer Student Experience,” CBA SK, 2023)

I have greatly benefited from this supportive environment, which has helped me grow professionally and personally.
